As previously mentioned, I went to a donkey sanctuary on Sunday afternoon. It’s actually a petting farm where they keep rescue donkeys and ponies, and they have an owl rescue centre as well. But since this is an equestrian blog, I’m going to focus on the donkeys; they were my principal motivation for going there, anyway!
I feel this tale would be best told through the medium of photographs:
-
-
First sighting of the donkeys!
-
-
There was a family with a young child by the fence as we approached.
-
-
When they went away, this chap – name of Eddie – came over to the fence to make sure they were gone.
-
-
Once they were satisfied that the child had gone away, they all came down to greet us.
-
-
Here, I put my fist out to greet Dixie.
-
-
We soon made friends. As Damian said, my facial expression is probably much the same as his.
-
-
Dixie was all about the affection, and alternated between myself and Ellie.
-
-
This is Jim. He was also quite affectionate, but was allegedly more interested in the velcro on Damian’s sleeve than his hand.
-
-
This is Dougal. He kept watch for any more incoming children while we petted the others, and seemed to be very much in charge of this little herd.
-
-
Dixie again, probably wondering why we weren’t fussing him.
-
-
I decided to see if Eddie would warm to a scratch behind the ear. Dixie followed me and tried to muscle in on the attention.
-
-
Look how happy I look!
-
-
Jim seemed to be at the bottom of the pecking order, but when he was finally allowed to come and say hello he proved to be very friendly.
-
-
I didn’t want to leave. Heh.
Aww, look at those cute little furry bodies! Is it awful that I was marveling at the lovely drainage on that paddock? Textbook perfect set-up for equines!
We were very impressed with the standard of care of all the animals there, actually! The people who run it really seem to care and want the best for them, which is lovely. We were a bit worried that we’d get there and find the opposite was true!
