Japanese Horse Riding Vocabulary

This page is mainly intended as an aide memoire for me, but I have made it public should anyone else with a little knowledge of Japanese who is thinking of riding in Japan happen upon it and think they might find it useful. I’ll update it as I go along.

General Terms

騎馬 きば Horse riding

乗馬 じょうば Horse riding

馬術 ばじゅつ Dressage

障害飛越 しょうがいひえつ Show jumping

競馬 けいば Horse racing

馬場 ばば Horse riding ground/yard

馬小屋 うまごや Stable/stall

Tack

頭絡 とうらく Bridle

轡 くつわ Bit

馬銜 はみ Bride and bit together

手綱 たづな Reins

折手綱 おりたづな Draw reins

鞍 くら Saddle

鐙 あぶみ Stirrup

蹄鉄 ていてつ Horseshoe

Horse Gait

常歩 なみあし Walking pace

速足 はやあし Trot

け速足 けはやあし Rising trot

駆足 かけあし Canter

まきのり 20 metre circle

半まきのり はんまきのり 10 metre circle

手前 てまえ To change reins

逼迫して ひっぱくして Squeeze with your legs
